Top 5 Tips For Your Family Vacation Getaway

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Family vacations are opportunities for everyone in the family to recharge and rejuvenate while stepping outside the normal activities of daily life. They can be some our most memorable experiences. But advance planning is needed too if you want to have the perfect family vacation. Since vacation activities are not part of our normal routine, it’s easy to forget some things that make a real difference on whether the trip is pleasant and exciting, or a real disappointment instead. Here are the top 5 tips to help make your family vacation getaway successful:

1. Make sure that before you leave you make a few phone calls to confirm all the reservations that you have made for the trip. There is nothing more irritating than getting to your destination only to find that a mistake has been made and you don’t have the hotel, car rental, or activity reservations that you thought you did. This can be especially problematic with making all of your reservations over the internet. So a quick phone call to make sure that all is waiting for you as promised can save a lot of aggravation later on.

2. Check the weather at your destination and make sure that the clothes you have packed will be sufficient. In some places the weather can change rapidly and if you aren’t prepared with the right clothing it can make for a very uncomfortable stay. It may be a good idea to check with weather.com not only about the current weather situation but also what is being forecast for the next 10 days or so just to try to get as complete a picture as possible.

3. If you are flying to your family vacation getaway, take a carry on bag with you that has all the important papers that you need including your travel schedule, lodging information, credit cards, travelers checks, and so forth. It may also be a good idea to include a few clothing items that can get you through a day or two after you arrive just in case your checked luggage is lost or misplaced.

4. If you are driving to your destination, be sure to have a good road atlas handy that can get you all the way from your origin to your destination with easy to follow maps. You can even go one better by visiting mapquest.com and getting specific driving directions that will lay out every step along the way and give you the most details possible about the upcoming trip. Also don’t forget to get directions for the return trip as well.

5. If you are visiting a foreign country, arrange for all necessary paperwork such as visas, passports, birth certificates, etc. well in advance so you don’t have unexpected delays as you travel. Also try to get some of that country’s currency before you leave so you have it on hand when you arrive. You may also want to consider protecting yourself from pickpockets in foreign countries by putting your cash in a money belt instead of a wallet.

A few simple precautions taken in advance can help make your family vacation getaway in to the perfect family vacation that you will remember fondly for many years to come.

Taking Risks: Betting Establishment Taking Risks

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

In case you are a newbie concerning betting house gaming, feel free to read on. A valid description of a gaming room is an edifice that accomodates games. Patrons will be encouraged to bet going for slot-machines or different games. Gaming room games most often include mathematically calculated probabilities informing them that insure the gambling saloon keeps possession of its versus the gambling aficionados.

Far too many casino games can incite you into being hooked very rapidly. For instance the archetypal 1-armed-bandit, a coin eating apparatus with three reels that pirouette if a bar hitched to it is yanked. This gadget in the main compensates with reference to an array of glyphs discernible on the dials on the contraption. Disastrously, betting establishment pastimes tend to convey a misconception of influence, effectively conning the betting enthusiast — the addressee is challenged with make some alternatives, but they won’t truly level the patron’s fundamental negative odds. This is precipitated by the betting hall not refunding the full amount as hoped for. This scheme is again and again noticeable in acclaimed casino games like seven-card stud poker, dice games, roulette or blackjack.

Five card stud is a very a highly popular casino game. The gambling devotees, playing with partially concealed hands, place their stakes into a principal pot that is then paid out to the prevailing punter sitting on the best hand. (Obviously, the bluffing hand may well prevail too.) Analogous to poker, blackjack is likewise a highly trendy casino pastime. A considerable amount of its appeal is thanks to its peculiar mix of chance and craft & decision making, and a praxis identified as card counting. This is a skill through which gaming enthusiasts may actually change the arm of chance of the card game for their own good both by wagering & strategy decisions in correspondence with the hands dealt.

Craps is a famous wagering game making use of the throw of a couple of dice. Gamesters can make bets on the outcome of of 1 spin, or on a string of rolls of 2 dice. Contrary to blackjack, there is no practicable winner tactics punters could cash in on to beat the odds. Roulette is another prominent gambling pastime. A croupier rotates a roulette wheel containing thirty-seven (classical roulette) or, alternatively 38 (American or Vegas roulette) independently numbered cells in which a pellet will settle, signifying the final winning number Whenever our player bets on a particular number which is successful so they’ve got a lucky hand, the promised premium will be thirty-five to one, the original wager will be returned. Consequently in totality the pledge itself is increased by 36.

We recommend you try to be very on the lookout nevertheless because many of such gaming room games should be considered awfully dependency building. Countless lives have regrettably been spoilt through uncontrolled gambling + albeit it admittedly may be enjoyable, do venture to govern oneself.

Under The Volcano

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The town sits at the base or “under the volcano” named Tungurahua. We wanted to see it erupt, so we paid the $3 each for a two-hour trip to a hill overlooking the town. The top of the volcano was visible from there, and sure enough, it coughed up a bit of lava on cue. I had another rum drink and helped to push-start the vehicle that brought us there.

My wife Ana and I spent a week there in Baos, Ecuador, in June of 2004. The hotel, with cable TV, cost $6 per night. The usual rate was $12, but we’re good negotiators. Lunch was just $1 each day, or $2.25 total for both, with tip. Typically, it was chicken, rice, beans, salad and juice. Every other day we splurged and paid $1.50 at a nicer place.

Hot Springs Of Baos

The town really is right under the volcano, which has caused problems for the residents over the years. The upside is that it also causes an abundance of hot water. Baos has two hot spring facilities, and two with cold water. They are some of the best mineral springs in Ecuador.

The most popular is at the base of a waterfall that tumbles from the mountain above. It is a short walk from anywhere in town, and it costs just a dollar, or a little more if you want to enjoy the mineral-rich waters under the stars each evening. Thre is a sign that documents the various minerals found in the water, and many come to alleviate their arthritis or other illnesses.

A trip to one of the hot springs became a daily ritual. Afternoons Ana shopped. I played chess in the open market in the center of town, with Manolo or Rene, or other locals. At all times, we enjoyed the scenery. Just look up and you see lush hills and classic colonial architecture all around.

Evenings are for dancing. Santo Pecado (“saint/sinner”) was usually our first stop. The owner was always ready to trade stories. Tuparina was our favorite disco, perhaps due to the huayusa, a drink made of a psychadelic plant collected by the family of the owner.

Under The Volcano Tungurahua

Several of the dozens of volcanos in Ecuador are active. Tungurahua, which overlooks Banos, is one of the most active. You need to get out of town to see it, because Baos is set deep in the surrounding lush, green mountains, which block the view. A great way to get a good look is on a “volcano tour.”

Several operations in Banos take you on tours to see an eruption. Just flag down one of the “chivas” circling town and blasting loud music in the evening. A chiva is an open-sided bus of sorts, with seating inside or on the roof.

Ana rode inside, and I had to try the roof. My advice? Watch out for branches! We toured the city with party music playing the whole time, then headed into the mountains. There were fire-juggling entertainers on top of the hill, and free hot rum drinks. We looked down on the lights of Banos, and even saw Tungurahua spit up some lava. A two-hour experience, drinks and the honor of helping push-start the chiva. Not bad for $3 each.

Other Activities in Banos

There is a great zoo (bears, birds, tortoises and more). You can rent an ATV, bicycle to nearby waterfalls or tunnels, party in dozens of bars, buy avocados for 20 cents, see a recent movie in your own private viewing room for $1.50 per person (bring all the food and drinks you want) – and almost everything is within a few blocks of any hotel. Banos is beautiful, with a perfect climate year-round.

The real name of the town is Baos de Agua Santa, but it is usually just called Baos. It is in the Andes Mountains, at the foot of the volcano Tungurahua, in Ecuador, South America. Any of the busses from Quito, eighty miles to the north, will cost you less than five dollars. Ready for a vacation under the volcano?

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the U.S. and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. For travel stories, tips and a free e-book, visit: www.EverythingAboutTravel.com

Mexico and Renting a House Part II

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I wanted to continue with the next column in the series Living in Mexico. However, I am still in such a snit over the fiasco with our previous landlord, I thought I should write part three in the series on renting a house in Mexico.

If you decide you indeed want to spend the rest of your days in Mexico, you will want to rent a place before deciding if you want to buy or not.

In our books, we recommend rent first, buy later. This is the smart way to go for so many reasons. The main reason is if you don’t have even a smattering of Spanish, how will you know who you can trust? You will be forced to depend on someone you don’t know well (or at all) to tell you the truth. If you think renting in Mexico is a Gringo-rip-off-racket, wait until I tell you about buying.

Anyway, before renting any place in Mexicoanywhere–here is what you need to ask, do, and insist upon to keep yourself from being ripped off by Mexican landlords. The following is what I wished someone had told us BEFORE we moved to Mexico:

1. Go to Spanish language schools and ask the person who coordinates the housing for their students about the housing situation. They will be in the know on who is trustworthy and who is not. They will not deal with the known shysters because this would be bad for their Language School business. If an American student gets screwed by one of the home stays or apartment rental arrangements, then that American will sing like a canary when he or she gets home. He or she may even create a website mean-mouthing the school. So, the schools are a good source for housing information.

2. When viewing an apartment for rent, you need to have a checklist either memorized or written out. Always have in the forefront of your mind that a Mexican landlord sees an American renter as a fabulous, endless source of funds for remodeling his apartment or house. At the end of your lease, you will be told that you broke everything from the plumbing to the electricity. You will be told that you will receive NOT ONE THIN DIME (peso) back of your rental deposit. I am not making this upTRUST ME. So, to try to head this off at the pass, you need to use to following as a checklist. It is not a bad idea to have the potential landlord actually sign something agreeing to the faults that exist before you take possession of the property.

• Check the hot water heater. Make the property owner light it to show that it works. Ask the age of it and write it down. Have the landlord initial it.

• Go immediately to the shower and turn on the hot water. Clock how long it takesif everfor the hot water to come through. Check ALL faucets. This is a favorite ploy. The landlord will know the thing doesn’t work. He or she will have tried to harass the last occupant into paying for brand-new plumbing. He or she will have kept the deposit claiming the previous occupant “broke the plumbing”. He or she plans to do the same to you. If the hot water heater nor the hot water faucets do not work, and you like the place, tell him or her you will rent the place WHEN and IF the hot water situation is fixed.

• Check all the chairs. Check the dining room, bedroom, patioanywhere there is a chair. Look for aging. Look for wear and tear. This is another one of the ploys to refurnish the apartment or house. He or she will put in furniture that Christ probably sat on at the last supper. It will be so old that just looking at it the wrong way will cause it to crumble into a pile of rubbish. The landlord will claim that you used it as a trampoline and broke it and will charge you for it. If you find a micro fissure in anything in the house, point this out and demand it be taken out of the house and NOT included in the inventory or in the rental contract.

• Check all glasses, dishes, silverware, appliances, and pots and pans for fissures, fractures, scratches or anything that looks like it might cause something to shatter. Make sure all appliances work properly. Point out any defects. In our previous house, the glasses provided by the landlady were so fragile, they broke the first time we used them. We had to buy her all new glasses.

• Check, try, turn on and off all the lights, verify, lay on the beds, do whatever it takes to route out defects that are already in the property BEFORE signing a lease. If you like the apartment and want it, then tell the landlord that you will rent it, CASH ON THE LINE, if he or she fixes the peccadilloes you just found with your cool checklist. Here is what will happen next.

You will be told the Spanish equivalent of, “Don’t let the screen door hit you where the dog should have bit you.”

You will be told this after witnessing the most riotous laughter you have ever heard in your life. You might even be chased out of the house with the owner setting the hounds after you.

Here is the thing. The potential Mexican Landlord will not submit to a Gringoespecially an American onetelling them that such-and-such will have to be fixed before you move into their property. The reason is simple. They will be able to find any number of sucker Americans, Canadians, Europeans, or Orientals who will gladly fork over whatever excessively inflated price the Mexicans are asking for the place and then fork over their deposit, at the end of their lease, when the landlord claims they broke the electricity!

That is how it is and you cannot change it! When it comes to most everything in Mexico, not one shred of ethics or logic appliesever!

Since there will always be some Gringo ready to cave in to Mexican Landlord’s aberrant behavior, that behavior will always be reinforced and will never change.

An ethic of honesty and fair play does not seem to apply when it comes to a Mexican’s dealing with Gringos.

It just doesn’t!

Astounding Dishwashers Online

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

When and if you should be searching for the best bargain on Dishwashers, perusing on the internet can be a lovely tactic to not waste cherished time & cash. If you’re tired of looking round outlet after high street retail shop looking for your new dishwasher then why don’t you jump on your laptop and get on-line and commence browsing.

You should regularly purchase from shops you really trust, nonetheless, when faced with a disturbing number of unknown stores on-line this might be difficult. A fantastic approach to stave off shopping with undependable shops is to shop with on line retailers who also have a prevalent high street presence. You really should also be extra sure to extensively look over the terms & conditions of any stores you’re seriously mulling over obtaining your dishwasher from. Shopping around is always a prudent thing when looking for dishwashers online.

An additional approach to spot a reputable web store when you’re surveying the market-place for quality dishwashers is to be sure to find out whether the store own an impartial and good shoppers handbook. Consulting a guide might also bring out a big array of points you can often not have ordinarily considered if you were merely browsing on your own. The aforementioned can often include; energy consumption, further features and dryer capacity amongst other things.

Be very wary of obfuscated costs – VAT and home-delivery fees that are added on at the payment stage may ofttimes modify that first incredible price you found for your dishwasher into something startlingly unremarkable.

Some internet retailers are faster than others – if the speed at which you receive your families new dishwasher is simply not a concern then this should simply not bother you that much at all. Nonetheless, if you’d rather not be manually scrubbing the knifes and forks and pans over X-mas then you will probably wish to pick a store who makes available guaranteed home-delivery times.

Dishwashers can generally look the part when they are sat in a display room or on a web-site but wind up disappointed when they reaches your home. So be certain to check the returns policy of the website you are ordering from.

Kitchen Decorating Tips For Christmas

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Most people spend a lot of time decorating their home for the holidays, but when it comes to the kitchen many are at a loss as to how to spruce it up for Christmas. Here are some easy and inexpensive ways that you can get your kitchen into the holiday spirit.

One thing that adds a lot to the kitchen at any time of year is to decorate above the cabinets. If you have a space between the tops of your cabinets and the ceiling, then you have a great place decorate! For the holidays, you can put up some garland or greenery. Maybe add some red bows or ornaments and little white lights for the season. If you already have decorations up there, you can work around those or go all out by replacing what you currently have up there with Santa’s, trees and other holiday decorations.

You might already give your kitchen table a festive look by putting a holiday centerpiece in the middle, but why stop there? If your table is big enough, you can put a small tree on it! Maybe one of those quaint Victorian bottle brush trees would look neat? Just something about 2 or 3 feet tall and not so wide that it takes up the whole table.

Of course, you’ll want to complete the look by leaving your table set with a Christmas theme dishes, placemats, glasses and silverware. Just leave it setup all during the holidays and it will add a great festive look to your table. If you are on a budget, shop at your local consignment store, thrift store, or flea market for holiday themed tableware.

Another way to dress up your table is to give it a great holiday tablecloth. If you are really ambitious, you can even make or buy matching slipcovers for the chairs. Even non-upholstered chairs can be made to look cozier with fabric slip covers that slip over the backs. Some cover the seat and whole chair while others are made to only cover and decorate the back.

Another place you can add some holiday décor is around the windows. You can drape garland or greenery over your valances or tops of your curtains and put Christmas candles in the window. You can even buy fake snow for the panes. One little touch that looks great is to take a nice piece of ribbon and hang an ornament in each of the windows.

Our final Christmas decorating tip really rounds out the look and pulls the room together is holiday accents! Buy pot holders, kitchen towels and throw rugs with a holiday theme and splash them around the room to complete the look. If you are really ambitious, you can get cookie jars, canisters and other counter top items in the Christmas theme. Again, try yards sales, consignment stores and even antique stores for inexpensive items to use in your decorating.

The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself for the Holidays

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Personal Survival: The Holidays are coming!

Are the holidays stressful for you? Do the people around you seem to “freak out” with Holidaze chaos? Would you like to be in control of your levels of stress before Christmas hits?

Ask yourself these questions:
Does traveling to Holiday events create stress for you?
Do people in your family (or at work) act a little crazy and even annoying during this season?
Do you enjoy over eating (or drinking) with people you have avoided all year long at these seasonal celebrations?
Does the season get “expensive” for you?
Are your expectations of joy and happiness ever miss their mark?

Consider the best gift that you can give yourself is time for stress management. Time, What time? Well a program of regular stress management will actually save you time!
Your time savings will come from:

  • A.) Requiring less sleep (and the sleep you do get will be deeper and more restful)
  • B.) You will be able to concentrate better and so make fewer mistakes (that require time to repair)
  • C.) You will be able to communicate more effectively and so get more done in less time
  • D.) You will feel better and have more energy
  • E.) You will be better able to control your appetite and your response to your family’s craziness (or cope better with your expectations of happiness that may not be met)
  • F.) You not have to medicate yourself with alcohol or drugs to survive your Xmas anxiety

This gift of self-care will actually be the best gift that you can give your friends and family. They will have one less crazed person running through their lives. Better still, you will be the best role-model for your family and friends. (They need a “healthy” role model.)

Self-care would include a regular program of exercise, sensible diet (moderation,) and daily relaxation. The best relaxation for self-care “newbies” is to listen to a guided relaxation (on CD) that will help you concentrate on relaxation for 15-20 minutes. With a little practice this will feel great, help you to rest/sleep better, and save you time/energy.

Don’t wait for New Years to make the resolution to practice self-care. You will need it to survive the Holidaze!

Remember you can not control the way other people behave or respond during the holidays, but you can control the way that you respond.

Please take good care of yourself. Enjoy the Holidays.
